LISTEN TO 'NEW TIDE' NOW

NEW TIDE album - Out today

So happy to share this collection of songs with the world and let them out of my grasp!  It's been a long time in the making from composing each song, to testing them out at gigs, making demos, recording alternate versions, and doing a whole bunch of other things at once or inbetween.

Today I'm very proud of how they all sound together on 'New Tide' and also my journey towards release, I've learnt so much!  I hope you enjoy the listen.

Thank you to the legendary team who helped capture and bring the magic. I'm so grateful for your talents and support.

Interview with Vonu Beer

CATCHING UP WITH VONU MUSICIAN MATT ARMITAGE

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT MATTHEW ARMITAGE IS AN ACCOMPLISHED MUSICIAN.  SINCE RELOCATING FROM NEW ZEALAND TO BYRON BAY IN 2013, ARMITAGE HAS BEEN MAKING HIS MARK AS A SOLO BLUESMAN AMONGST BYRON’S THRIVING MUSIC SCENE. A MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST, SINGER AND SONGWRITER, ARMITAGE HAS THE ABILITY TO CAPTIVATE HIS AUDIENCE AT AN INTIMATE LEVEL OR SET A HUGE VENUE ALIGHT FOR A PARTY LIKE NO OTHER.  HIS TALENTS HAVE SEEN HIM PLAY IN HUNDREDS OF SHOWS IN AUSTRALIA AND TRAVEL ACROSS THE WORLD PLAYING GIGS IN MUSIC HUBS SUCH AS NEW YORK AND BERLIN. EARLIER THIS YEAR VONU ASKED ARMITAGE IF HE WOULD BE WILLING TO PUT FORWARD AN ORIGINAL SONG FOR ANDY GOUGH’S SHORT FILM ‘MOONTIDE.’ ARMITAGE ACCEPTED OUR REQUEST AND THE END RESULT WAS SPECTACULAR. ON THE CUSP OF RELEASING HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM TITLED ‘NEW TIDE’ VONU CAUGHT UP WITH ARMITAGE TO HAVE A QUICK CHAT ABOUT HIS MUSIC.

Interview with Blank Gold Coast Magazine

Bluesman Matthew Armitage has delivered a rustic new video for latest single ‘Love from Afar.’

The low-fi offering, filmed at the old Tallebudgera Post Office on an iPhone and provides a visual montage for the first track off Matthew’s upcoming album ‘New Tide’.

‘Love from Afar’ is a redemptive tale of a lover done wrong, inspired by a time when the lines between gospel, hillbilly and blues were not so well defined. Matthew’s danceable blues riffs (which flow through to his own dance moves on the clip) will lead to serious foot stomping for all who listen.

Matthew says the concept for the video came from his friend Polly Armstrong who told him to just “punch out a clip”. Matthew’s girlfriend Candi shot the clip performing the song in various angles using the 8mm app on Boxing Day while Canid’s mum took their daughter for a walk.

“…butterflies started joining us, I think attracted by the colours on Candi’s top, after about 20 minutes in,” Matthew told Blank Gold Coast. “They liked too maybe her special energy, but maybe the music too!

“Initially after we were finished I thought we didn’t have much good footage, I felt like I should have worn a nice shirt!”

“But after starting the editing process I discovered the first opening sequence where I introduce the location and then the butterflies. The inspiration was right there – how to use those amazing butterflies in the edit. They were the perfect feminine counter to my own energy, and also worked well as spirit animal background singers in the edit!”

Matthew Armitage, originally from New Zealand now residing in Tweed Heads, is best known in Byron Bay and Gold Coast for his unique electric guitar work with The Swamps and Chesta Hedron. His solo show features acoustic guitar accompanied by a foot stomp where he conjures up sounds reminiscent of artists like Shakey Graves, Muddy Waters and JJ Cale.

While his soundsound encapsulates the best of the traditional blues aesthetic he also incorporates new electric and acoustic guitar techniques, which create a dynamic and ever-changing live show.
